Hypnogogic pictures prevent sleep?

Last night I had my own, private sound & light show behind closed lids - I meditated for about 30minutes then settled down to sleep, but could not - I was watching the most amazing, beautiful pictures streaming behind my eyelids, for HOURS. I've no idea what many of them represented; just lights, colours & "jewels" in various shaps, mostly circles, & beautiful buildings, scenes etc. All very fluid, but sometimes "made" of some sort of "dark" fabric.

Has anyone else experienced this?

We all experience this. It's what dreams are made of, and can be a platform for phasing. You probably phased into 3D black and didn't even notice.
