The filaments could however not be gas at all, but electrified plasma, according to the "electric universe" hypothesis. It's just an interesting theory, of course. :shrug:

On another thought, I remember someone somewhere compared the universe (the physical that we "see") to a gigantic brain with the galaxies being neurons and so the connections we have now as (gas or plasma) filaments could be the axons and dendrites. Interesting association for sure.
