I don't find the the old European grimoires all that complex. They are all based on astrology at their core.

The vast majority of people are incapable of performing even basic magic, like a simple banishment, or the LBRP, so anything involving complex training, knowledge, and practices, can be said to be advanced.

And out of those interested or knowledgeable in magic, probably only a few percent actually practice any magic at all.
