View Full Version : Dangers of being caught in a "Rift" when projecting?

Hello everyone, I'm a tad new here, and I thought I'd get a few opinions about a small predicament I'm facing with astral projection...
You see, a friend of mine who's experienced in astral projection says that what I'm experiencing while attempting to project are signs that I'm not going for the astral plane at all, but rather a "rift" between planes, where the souls of ruined people go when they die, etc. He says it's a very dangerous place, where a person can go insane and get mentally/spiritually torn to peices. I know personally little to nothing about such a place, and nor will anything on the internet confirm the existence of such a place... or at least, the nature of such a place as this.
Over the years, I've learned off-and-on to relax deeper, get into trance, and finally, to let go of my body to a degree, but it's so strange the way it happens. When I lose feeling of my body, I feel like I'm spinning, or going down an insanely fast rollercoaster, or banking left or right in a fighter jet and being hit with huge g-forces that I actually intensely feel. Sometimes the feeling is so great that my physical stomach muscles clench and almost threaten to interrupt my trance state. At this point, I aggressively focus on letting go of the body, and the disorientation becomes greater until the point where I feel my body no more. Last time, it happened for about 3 seconds, where I lost all physical connection with my body, and I went to a nondescript nothing-place where I couldn't see anything. And then I was sucked back into my body as if pulled back by bungie cords and I lost the feeling of disorientation just as quickly. I have never experienced something so powerful as this astral projection attempt in my life, and in a strange way, I was a little exhausted.
My friend says that until I 'know myself' I won't be able to hit the astral plane. He says that I'll only fall to the rift instead. So, I've been doing a bit of research, and learned a lot about what it is to know oneself...quite fascinating lessons, but time will tell when it makes a difference. Advice please, friends? *hopeful*
It would be nice to not have to risk losing my sanity when I'm trying to gain a new ability such as this.

Best advice is don't listen to your friend.
he obviously does not know anything about projection
Projection has a lot of strong sensations which are documented in Astral Dynamics Revised Edition.

last night i had very strong sensations , dosnt mean i will go to hell mate, read MAP you will know what is going on also astral dynamic is helping me a lot.
You must read and learn from bruce books or others book me personaly i prefer bruce books because all i have read works, from energy work to raising energy and all the other things so i trust him. Specialy buy the MAP cd and go slowly CD' to CD that will be lot easier because he talks to you.
i guess you are not different than others here that did OBE all life and are still alive with all brain and body in good health.
CF traveller told me before there is nothing to worry about so i tell you the same, you have nothing to worry about. All you will see in the astral projection will be what you created in your mind your fears, and also what other people created.
So remove that idea of rift from your mind and fly safely easily and enjoy life, think about love when you try to project instead of going down i reckon you will go up because love is good, very good ... :D

I have to say that this is the first time I ever heard about a 'rift'- your friend must have been reading some very obscure occult literature, is all I can say.
To help you with your cosmology, I recommend you read Robert's Treatise on Astral Projection, especially "What is the Astral Dimension? (http://www.astraldynamics.com/home/astral-projection-training/treatise-on-astral-projection/61-part-1.html)" and some articles on the OBE research and discussion, which should put some different labels on how the astral is perceived.
Here is an overview of Monroe Focus Levels and how they relate to astral planes/dimensions/locales: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10282 (http://forums.astraldynamics.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10282)
As you can see, afterlife realms are part of the astral planes, and not some 'rift' you may 'fall' into.

Well, he certainly gave me trepidation about the whole thing... I don't want to have something to get in my way, and I'll likely be able to push it aside in a day of thinking or so. Thank you for your input. Have you ever astrally projected? If so, is my experience in any way similar to yours?

I looked at MAP and when I get the money allocated, I'll give it a 'go'. I appreciate the advice. Have you ever astrally projected before? If so, what did you go through? Were your experiences at all similar to mine?

I looked at MAP and when I get the money allocated, I'll give it a 'go'. The Treatise I linked you to gives a good description of the astral planes, and the whole of it gives you practices you can adopt if you want to learn to induce it consciously.

Something you might experiment with instead is to try to relax into it instead - forcing usually is not advicable when it comes to energy work. A feeling of allowing to flow or float, glide, etc. might work.

This is purely fascinating stuff! I've read a good deal of the material you sent me, by now, and with all I've read about it, I'm still learning a crap ton more. Question-- have you ever successfully astrally projected before?
Yep. My journals are at the OBE forum.

I am still new at this, but I always assumed that individuals are drawn to locations equal to where your concsiousness is. Kind of like the "you are what you eat" saying. I do not watch scary movies, but if I did watch a slasher flick or scary movie before falling asleep I would hope that I stay in my physical body that night. Likewise, if a person consitently has hell-like thoughts or intentions towards others I could see them being drawn to an unpleasant realm.97% or so of people are not like that, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Not to say that when people have moments that frighten them while having an obe it is because they have bad thoughts or intentions. Navigating in a completely new environment for our conscious mind takes some getting used to. I guess you and I are still "learning to walk" in a sense when it comes to obe. :)

This makes sense, and I think my friend doesn't know me as much as he might, because as undeveloped I still am, I am nowhere near some hell-consciousness or anything of that nature. I used to hold terrible grudges, and have absolutely no control over my anger, but that's totally gone years ago. Who I am today is a rather amiable person who wants to have fun with life as much as possible.
Aww, it's wierd being new to the whole thing among a large group of experienced individuals, isn't it? Have you ever experienced OBE? I seem to ask everyone, and it's a question that isn't readily answered, but to me is isn't answered at all. Heh, I agree about the scary movie though, that stuff needs to be gone from the mind. It's not necessary to live a full life by watching SAW 1-6 in succession. *chuckles*

I have had a few brief unplanned incidents over the years that end when I notice what is going on. I have been a bit of a chicken when it comes to obe. I have intentionally suppressed exit out of fear and not wanting to surrendering to the unknown.
I have been on the edge of psycic activity. Hearing, sensing or smelling spirits off and on - not usually ,seeing them clearly and straight out or on my terms. Sometimes it's unsettling to think there is someone with me who can see me but I can't see them or know what they want. I have never been harmed, just spooked. Because of the energy work I have been doing for 18 years I feel like I have a handle on my environment.
Now I have taken the next brave step of leaving my body. I began reading Mastering Astral Projection 90 day guide to obe from RB and BM on Jan 4th - last month. It is fantastic. I have had 3 clear experiences.
1) fell asleep in an uncomfortable position on the sofa in the afternoon, my teenage son was in the room playing video games on the computer. I went from having an unpleasant dream to being aware of a scream comming out of one aspect of me and also being aware of my legs being in the air and my head falling....falling...falling... Somehow I had the instinct that I was supposed to match the tone and level of this screachy scream - so I did. I never fully disconnected from my body, but atleast I was aware of being partially out. My son heard no screaming.
2) Feb 10th I went from dreaming to waking within dream and realizing that I was having vibrations. I tried my exit and again could hear a scream comming from another aspect of myself (not an angry or scary scream). I knew to match the scream in level and tone and I did. I raised up above physical and sank down beside the bed like a deflating helium balloon. My vision was not clear and as soon as I took note of this, everything went black. I hung out beside the bed for a few minutes and then decided to try and turn over in the air. Getting going was a little hard (I think because I was kind of expecting it to be, being used to a physical body) but as soon as I gained the slightest momentum it was easy. I did a 360. The air on my skin felt so exhilerating and tingly. Part of me saw the outline of me doing this (mind split?). I still couldn't anything around me though. Thought about commanding light/vision, wondered if anyone one would hear me -felt a tiny bit uneasy and decided to re-enter physical. Re-entering felt slightly euphoric and tingly.

3) Feb 14 Tried off and on to leave body throughout eve. I had a piece of tinfoil under a candle that was protecting a sterling silver tray in my room and throughout these attempts I would hear the tinfoil being played with. Was not sure whether it was my own energy or someone else in the room - found it distracting. Suddenly woke up to vibrations, astral noises and wind in the room. I was excited and immediately worked on exit. I tried sitting up this time. After about 7-8 seconds of struggle I did it! First thing I worked on was vision. I commanded light quite a few times and finally got it. I went and chatted with one of my sons telling him I was happy that I got out. He seemed to be aware - maybe he was having obe too, he did not remember this in the am. I was out for a long time. Tried many things from drinking a cold glass of milk, walking through a wall to eventually flying, after alot of clumsy attempts. I tried to go to a particular location and ended up in a dark location in the midddle of a football field with a game in progress. I was nervous about being trampled. In my other experiments I accidentally hurt myself a little bit, nothing serious. I finally got out of the way, it took longer than it should have. I visited my mother - from there things began to get a little strange and dream like. I ended up in a very long dream like situation. I was aware that it was dream like but had a hard time returning. After alot of interactions and events I asked a group of ladies to shake my body so that I can return to it and wake up. One of these ladies I had not seen in over 20 years. She gladly gave me a good rattle - she had a good sense of humour about it. Seemingly it worked. I do not remember returning to the physical but I do not remember much after she gave me a good refreshing shake either.

A way to instantly return to body is to simply remember yourself sitting (or laying) on your bed, and you will suddenly find yourself there. If you then find yourself paralyzed, wiggle your big toe, and you will wake up.

I've had that before... the scream thing, wondered if it was just me or if anyone else had experienced it.

That is such a beautiful story. Ahhhh, so much to look forward to, yet the wonderful thing is there is no way I can truly anticipate what will actually happen. I deeply appreciate your consideration and the confidence and support you have conveyed. Personally, it has been very hard getting over my fear of what I was told by that 'friend', and subsequent attempts have been completely muffled in effectiveness, but I'll heal from it soon enough I'm sure. You are a wonderful source of encouragement! *smiles wide*

Apart from one little 'ol post that was a stir in the pot, im starting to notice a pattern here. I can only think of one other person who would pitch AD this much and that would be THE AUTHOR! The secret is out we all know who this is now rOBErt!! :P :P

Hi undeniableguile!!
Regarding astral projection, just because you feel you are going downward, it doesn't mean you are going downward, which might be why your friend was concerned. If anything sometimes when you initially successfully POP through you can hear, perhaps see some scary shadowy things, worst they'll do is startle you back into your physical body. I personally recommend mediating, Tia Chi, Yoga, some Kung Fu to align your energy and raise your confidence level. I think your off to a great start!!

Ever since the day he advised me wrongly, I've lost significant confidence in myself, and haven't been able to get into that disoriented state since, but everything should go back to normal in due time. You seriously think I'm on the right track with this, though? That's awesome! I'll definetly let ya'll know when I'm able to break free finally. Do people here hold meetings in the astral sometimes?
Yeh, screw the shadowy creatures-- all I'll need is a flashlight for them. 8) It'll scare them back into their bodies...oh wait, they have no bodies, so haha.
