There's a place I sometimes go in my dreams, it's a mysterious forest full of all sorts of strange animals, in particular there's a small lake where some turtles the size of large cars live. What sort of signifigance might this have?

The forest is possibly the subconscious were all kinds of things live and grow.

As for turtles, I can give you some associations but you'll need to work it out yourself.
- Longevity: something that is long-lived.
- Protection: the turtle carries its own shield. The hard exterior protects the soft interior.
- Self-sufficiency and adaptability. The turtle carries its own home and can survive in terrestrial and water environments.
- Steadiness. In the story of the rabbit and the tortoise, it is the tortoise that wins through a slow and steady persistence.
- Food in some cultures.

The turtle may well be your totem. I suggest you search for "Turtle Totem" on the net if this interests you.
